The manufacturing sector of the biopharma supply chain is plagued by deep-rooted challenges that directly affect global health outcomes.
In US and Europe, it currently takes more than 6 months for biologics and generic medicines to move from raw materials to patient bedside, causing critical delays in treatment and slowing down clinical trials for innovative therapies. Biotech startups and molecule researchers face long lead times and high costs when relying on contract manufacturing, making it difficult to bring new medicines to market.
Meanwhile, the high cost of drug production renders life-saving treatments unaffordable for vast segments of the global population as 1 in 3 people lack access to essential medicines, according to the WHO. In lower-income regions, up to 50% of medicines are spoiled or never reach patients due to fragmented and inefficient supply chains.
At the same time, the industry continues to depend on outdated, inefficient manufacturing systems that waste 30–40% of production capacity each year due to frequent equipment failures and operational downtime.
